Laparoscopic and Robotic Cholecystectomy

Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) is performed under general anaesthetic using four small incisions.
  • The gallbladder is carefully separated from the liver and bile ducts using keyhole instruments.
  • The cystic duct and artery are clipped and divided under direct vision.
  • The gallbladder is then removed through one of the small port sites.
Robotic surgery offers enhanced 3-D visualisation and wristed instrument control, allowing exceptional precision — particularly valuable in difficult or re-operative cases. Most patients go home the same day or after a single night in hospital.

Intra-Operative Cholangiography and Bile-Duct Exploration

Safety and completeness are central to every procedure. During surgery, an intra-operative cholangiogram (real-time X-ray of the bile ducts) is performed to:
  • Confirm the anatomy before dividing any structures.
  • Identify unsuspected bile-duct stones.
  • Reduce the risk of bile-duct injury.

If stones are found, bile-duct exploration can often be performed during the same operation, allowing the stones to be removed without needing a separate ERCP procedure. In some cases, however, a later ERCP may still be required depending on the position or number of stones.This one-stop surgical approach means that diagnosis and treatment are completed under one anaesthetic, with faster recovery and minimal disruption.
