Dr Elizabeth Samuel, Clinical Psychologist

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 14 years of experience working with people managing long-term physical health conditions and complex medical needs. My specialism is working with those with physical health concerns to support individuals to understand the psychological, behavioural and emotional factors that can affect health and wellbeing.

As part of the bariatric pathway, I meet with individuals prior to surgery for a psychological consultation. This provides an opportunity to think through the changes that surgery will bring, explore readiness, and identify any areas that may need additional support to help people get the best possible outcome from their procedure.

Many people seeking bariatric surgery have had difficult experiences with weight, food, and healthcare over many years. My role is not to judge, but to provide a thoughtful, supportive space to reflect on these experiences and to ensure individuals feel prepared.

This is usually a brief piece of work focused on preparation for surgery, with the option of follow-up support if needed.

I work closely with the surgical team to help ensure patients feel informed, prepared and supported throughout their journey.
